The Boy Who Built a Windmill From Junk In 2001, a famine hit Malawi. A fourteen-year-old boy had to leave school because his family couldn't pay. His name was William Kamkwamba. The fields were dry. His family ate once a day. But he didn't stop learning. He went to a small village library. He found a book with a windmill on the cover. He could barely read the English. He studied the pictures. A windmill could make electricity. And pump water. So he searched the scrapyard. A broken bicycle. Plastic pipes. Old car parts. The villagers laughed. Some said he had gone crazy. He built a tower from blue gum trees and blades from flattened pipes. Then the wind came. The blades turned. And a small light bulb flickered on. The boy they called crazy brought electricity to his home. Later he built a windmill to pump water for his village. And he graduated from Dartmouth College in America. One library book. One stubborn boy. Comment WIND if this inspired you.
