The Man Who Survived Both Atomic Bombs He survived the atomic bomb on Hiroshima. Then he took a train home, to Nagasaki. His name was Tsutomu Yamaguchi, a ship engineer. In August 1945, he was sent to Hiroshima for work. On his last day there, a plane passed overhead, and the sky turned white. He was about three kilometers away. The blast burned his skin and burst his eardrums. But he was alive. Wounded and bandaged, he made his way back to his home city. Nagasaki. Three days later, he went back to work. His boss didn't believe one bomb could destroy a city. And while he was explaining it, the same white light filled the window again. He survived again. He is the only person officially recognized by Japan as a survivor of both bombs. He lived to ninety-three, and spent his later years speaking out against nuclear weapons.
