Men Trapped in Antarctic Ice. Not One Died Twenty-eight men were trapped in the Antarctic ice for almost two years. Not one of them died. This really happened. In 1914, Ernest Shackleton sailed to Antarctica to cross it on foot. But the sea froze around their ship. They were stuck. For ten months. Then the ice crushed the ship, and it sank. They were alone, on floating ice. They camped on the ice for months, eating seals and penguins, dragging their lifeboats. When the ice broke up, they rowed to a tiny island. But nobody would ever find them there. So Shackleton and five men sailed a small lifeboat thirteen hundred kilometers, across the worst ocean on Earth. They landed, climbed over frozen mountains, and walked into a whaling station. Then he went back for the others. Every man he left on that island was still alive. Every single one. Twenty-eight men were trapped in the Antarctic ice for almost two years. Not one of them died.
