A little stray dog wandered into a training camp, and soldiers started feeding him. A young soldier, Robert Conroy, took him in, and named him Stubby, for his tiny tail. Stubby even learned to raise his paw to his head, like a salute. When the unit shipped out to France, Conroy hid Stubby on the ship. In France, Stubby could hear and smell danger before anyone else. He warned the soldiers of gas attacks, barking until they put on their masks. He found wounded men in the dark and stayed with them until help came. Then one night, he caught a spy, by grabbing him by the trousers until the soldiers arrived. He was promoted to sergeant, and came home a hero. He even met three American presidents.
