He Kept Fighting World War 2 for 29 Years World War Two ended in 1945. But one soldier kept fighting. For twenty-nine more years. This really happened. His name was Hiroo Onoda, and his orders were clear. Never surrender. He was sent to a small island in the Philippines, in 1944, to hide in the jungle and keep fighting. A year later, the war was over. But nobody told him in a way he believed. He thought every leaflet and every message was an enemy trick. Years became decades. He lived on bananas and rice, in heavy rain, in the same old uniform. Then in 1974, a young traveller called Norio Suzuki went looking for him. And found him. Onoda said he would only stop if his commander ordered him to. So they found his old commander, now a bookseller, and flew him to the island. He read the order. Onoda finally put down his rifle. Twenty-nine years. World War Two ended in 1945. But one soldier kept fighting. For twenty-nine more years.
