Nobody Ever Picked Him for the Team Every single day, Milo was picked last. Or not picked at all. He was the smallest kid in class. Too slow, they said. Too short. So every evening, Milo went to Grandma's house, where an old rusty hoop hung over the driveway. Grandma blew her whistle and said, you don't have to be tall. You just have to be ready. Every night, he practiced the same shot. One hundred times. Until it was dark. Then came the school championship. Jake's team was losing, and two players were injured. The coach looked down the bench. There was only one kid left. Milo. Three seconds left. Down by one. The ball landed in Milo's hands. He took the same shot he'd practiced a thousand times. Swish. The next day, Jake picked him first. Because you don't have to be tall. You just have to be ready.
