Why Young People Looted Shops Across France In October 2026, shops were looted in cities across France. And many of those arrested were very young. It started as protests about the cost of living. Since 2024, people's money has bought less and less. Then fuel prices soared after the US-Iran war began earlier in the year. Students had already been marching for weeks, angry about their future and their schools. On the weekend of October 17th, some protests turned into looting. Shops were hit in Paris, Lyon, Marseille, Lille, Nice and more. Supermarkets and phone stores were targets. Reports describe small, organised groups of young men, coordinating on social media and reselling stolen goods online. About twenty four hundred people were arrested. One report said around a third were minors, some only thirteen. Cities brought in curfews. The President said those who looted must pay back. And shop owners were left to clean up. Anger about money, a generation worried about its future, and social media. That's why shops were looted across France.
