She Fell 3 km From the Sky... and Survived 11 Days in the Jungle She fell three kilometers from the sky. Still strapped to her seat. And she lived. Christmas Eve, 1971. Seventeen-year-old Juliane Koepcke boarded a flight over Peru with her mother. Then the plane flew into a thunderstorm. Lightning hit it, and it broke apart in the air. She woke up alone on the jungle floor. A broken collarbone. One eye swollen shut. Her mother was gone. Her parents were scientists who had lived in the jungle. Her father once told her: if you are lost, follow the water. So she found a small stream, and she followed it. Day after day. She had almost no food. Insects attacked a wound on her arm. She kept walking. On the tenth day, she found a boat and a small hut. She waited there. The next day, loggers walked in. After eleven days, she was rescued. She was the only survivor. She grew up to study the same rainforest that almost killed her. Because she fell three kilometers from the sky, and she lived.
