The Soldier Who Refused to Carry a Gun He went into the worst battle of the war without a gun. And saved seventy-five men. This really happened. His name was Desmond Doss, an army medic in World War Two. He refused to ever touch a weapon. The other soldiers laughed at him and called him a coward. In 1945, his unit climbed a huge cliff on the island of Okinawa. Then the enemy attacked. Almost everyone retreated down the cliff. Dozens of wounded men were left on top. Doss stayed. Alone. He tied each wounded man to a rope, and lowered him down the cliff. One by one. Every time, he prayed: Lord, please help me get one more. By morning, he had saved about seventy-five men. The soldiers who laughed at him owed him their lives. He received the Medal of Honor. So remember. He went into the worst battle of the war without a gun. And saved seventy-five men.
