Men Trapped 700 Meters Underground for 69 Days Thirty-three men were trapped seven hundred meters underground. Everyone thought they were dead. This really happened, in August 2010, in a copper mine in the desert of Chile. A giant rock collapsed and sealed the tunnel. The thirty-three miners were cut off. They had food for just a few days. So their leader, Luis Urzua, made a rule. Everyone shares, equally. Each man got a spoonful of tuna, and a sip of milk, every two days. Seventeen days later, a drill broke through the rock above them. They tied a note to it. It said: we are fine in the shelter, the thirty-three. Up above, the whole country celebrated. But getting them out would take weeks more. On day sixty-nine, a narrow capsule brought them up, one at a time. All thirty-three came out alive. Every single one. Thirty-three men were trapped seven hundred meters underground. Everyone thought they were dead.
